We started by driving to Baker City, arriving in time to have dinner at the great brewpub located on the main street. We highly recommend the Bridge Street Inn for accomodation and Mad Matilda's Coffeehouse for breakfast and a morning cup of joe.
The next day we headed off to the Antler Cabin, a Forest Service owned cabin available for rent, located just south of the ghost town of Whitney. The weather was really cold, but there was not too much snow on the ground - so we started our adventures with a hike along a fork of the Burnt River.
The next day we woke up to a temperature of -12F. We warmed up with some coffee and took off for the next adventure. We switched to skis, staying to the north facing slopes which had retained sufficient snowcover for easy ski travel. The following day We crossed highway and explored around the mining town of Greenhorn, now a collection of weekend cabins.
After the second day of skiing we drove to John Day for a night's rest before heading back to Portland. Along the way we stopped off at the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument to enjoy the geology (ask Eric for details).
