Fall is here

About a week ago we had one day of cool weather, followed by a couple more hot, sunny days. Now, however, fall is here to stay.

The leaves are turning color and falling off the trees. The weather is cooler, wetter, and - most noticably -much windier. It is a reminder that there really is nothing to the northwest of Potsdam to block the wind coming in off the north Atlantic.

Saturday I took a short walk in the southern part of Berlin. (I was in town to visit an English-language bookstore.) Here is a view along one of the canals - notice the trees just starting to turn.

I discovered an interesting park on the north end of Kreutzberg. It lies in what was a canal during the early 1800s. In the late 1800s it was filled in to prevent disease from spreading; later an elaborate set of gardens was planned by the landscape architect Lenne. During period after the second world war, the canal route coincided with the Berlin wall and the area fell into disrepair. Now some part of the park has been re-established, while in other places it is allowed to grow wild. It is fun to have a long (if narrow) green space running through the city.

Finally, if you're wondering what's at the end of a Berlin rainbow, the answer is... Utopia!
