Muritz National Park

We took a day to travel a couple hours north of Berlin to Muritz National Park. The glaciers which once covered this part of Germany left behind a large flat area full of hundreds of lakes. Many of these are joined by rivers; others have been joined by canals dug for shipping.

We rented a canoe at one of the campgrounds and went on an adventure. Here I am paddling along one of the lake.

We followed the course of the Havel river downstream. The Havel is really just the way water flows through a long sequence of lakes; there is essentiall no current and often the "channel" is extremely narrow. At one point the channel was a small creek too narrow to paddle. Fortunately there was a "BootBahn" on which to push the canoe. The cart runs on a narrow set of train tracks and goes 750m. There's a small incline which makes moving the cart a lot of fun!

In other places, the trees overgrow over the "river channel".
