We went for a short walk this past week across the Glienicker Bridge, which links Potsdam to Berlin. On the Berlin side of the bridge is a huge park, which includes the grounds of a couple small "palaces" and a large woods laced with walking paths. There are also paths along the river front for several miles in each direction; it was a sunny day and the paths were filled with people strolling about. We walked for an hour or so downstream (towards Berlin's city center) until we came to a cafe, where we stopped for a pot of tea before walking back to the bridge. The whole experience was quite civilised.
An interesting feature of the bridge is that it co-incided with the boundary between West Berlin and East Germany during the DDR timeperiod. The Berlin Wall actually extended along the south (Potsdam) side of the river, which was monitored by patrol boats filled with guards. According to a plaque on the bridge, at three times during the Cold War there were spy exchanges on this bridge. Quite an exciting recent history.
